The social approach - Key terms

TermDefinition
Societies Large groups of people with same traditions
Norms What’s correct in that society or culture
Culture The ideas or customs of a society
Socialised The process of learning what is acceptable
Conformity Changing behaviour to that of a group
Normative social influence (NSI) Changing your mind or behaviour to fit in with a group and to not stand out.
Informational social influence (ISI) Changing your mind or behaviour to that of a group when you are unsure of the situation.
Status Perceived power of the person or group
Unanimity Total agreement between members of the group
Ambiguity/Ambiguous A situation where there is no clear and obvious way of how to act
Category A grouping of things that are similar
Assumption A decision about something based on minimal knowledge
Stereotype A common but simple view of a person or thing
Compliance Least conforming type of conformity. This involves changing your public views of the group but not changing your private views. This could be due to normative social influence.
Identification Middle conformity type of conformity. This involves changing you public views of the group and are more likely to change their private beliefs.
Internalisation Most conforming type of conformity. This involves changing both your public and private views to that of the group. It’s more likely to be permanent and results from informational social influence.
