The biological approach - key assumptions

What is behaviour a result of? physical parts of your body, e.g. your CNS genes and neurochemistry
What affects your body structure? the genes you inherit
What controls your behaviour? your CNS
What is your genetic information a result of? evolution
Over time, genetics create an adaptive advantage which means that those genes gave people characteristics that increased what? their chances of survival
Why is the biological approach scientific? it examines parts of the body that can be measured e.g. the brain through brain scans
How is understanding the brain and the body helpful? developing treatments for mental illnesses e.g. drugs to treat depression
How does the biological approach see influences on behaviour it states we have no free will over our behaviour and the environment doesn't influence our behaviour
How many chromosomes do humans have? 23

What is neuroanatomy? the physical structure of the brain
How many lobes does the brain have? 4
How many hemispheres does the brain have? 2
Which lobe of the brain is associated with aggression? frontal

Which part of the brain is involved with processing memory and emotional information? the limbic system
What is your 'fight or flight' system? it detects threat and sends a signal to your body to react ( fight or run away)
What is neurochemistry? changes in chemicals in your body that can result in a change in your behaviour through neurotransmitters or hormones
Which hormones is linked to stress? cortisol
Which hormone is linked to aggression and male development? testosterone
Which neurotransmitter is linked with mood and low levels of it can lead to depression? Seretonin
What is sexual selection? people with good genes are more appealing and attractive and more likely to pass genetics to the next generation
What are the 2 biological assumptions Behaviour is influenced by central nervous system (CNS), genes and neurochemistry. Behaviour is a product of evolution.
