Pain, Part 1
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Somatic pain | Type of pain felt in skin, muscles, joints, and bones that is conducted by sensory nerves |
Visceral pain | Type of pain that originates in the organs and is carried by the sympathetic nervous system |
Afferent | Toward |
Efferent | Away from |
Nociceptor | Pain receptor |
Pain threshold | Level of nerve stimulation required for an individual to perceive pain |
Pain tolerance | Ability to withstand pain or the perception of its intensity |
Dermatome | Area of the skin innervated by a particular spinal nerve, which maps to a certain area of the somatosensory cortex |
Reflex | Neural pathway for generating immediate, involuntary responses in the spinal cord that consists of a sensory neuron, an interneuron, and a motor neuron |
Thalamus | The brain’s information relay station |
Neospinothalamic tract | Rapid pathway for the signaling of acute pain |
Paleospinothalamic tract | Slow pathway for the signaling of chronic or dull pain |
Reticular Activating System (RAS) | Network of nerve pathways in the brainstem connecting the spinal cord, cerebrum, and cerebellum that influences the brain’s awareness of incoming pain stimuli |
Gate-control theory | Explanation for the attenuation of pain signals in the spinal nerves by other types of sensory inputs |
Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) | Therapeutic intervention that increases sensory stimulation at certain sites, blocking pain transmission |
Histamine | Chemical released by mast cells that mediates the inflammatory response through vasodilation, increased capillary permeability, and increased bronchial secretions |
Bradykinin | Peptide in the kinin cascade that promotes inflammation by causing vasodilation, increasing capillary permeability and stimulating prostaglandin release |
Prostaglandins | Group of lipids that sensitize nerves to pain, regulate blood clotting, and stimulate uterine contractions |
Substance P | Peptide neurotransmitter that modulates pain perception and promotes inflammation |
Endorphin | Peptide hormone that stimulates the body’s opiate receptors, producing an analgesic effect, also known as 'endogenous morphine' |
Serotonin | Chemical messenger that regulates mood, sleep, digestion, wound healing, bone health, blood clotting, and libido |
