General Vocabulary of Massage Therapy
Term | Definition |

Active Movement | Movement initiated and powered by the individual |
Passive Movement | Movement initiated and controlled by another person, while the recipient remains totally relaxed and receptive |
Assisted Movement | Movement initiated by an individual, while another person helps him or her complete it |
Resisted Movement | Movement initiated by an individual, while a second person offers resistance, thereby challenging the muscles used |
Mobilizing Techniques | Free passive joint movements, used in massage therapy; Non-specific movements applied within the normal range of motion |
Stretching | A type of joint movement applied to the limit of a joint’s normal range in a specific direction |
Simple Static Stretch | A type of passive stretch characterized by slow, sustained, and even application |
Contract-Relax-Stretch | Techniques, the practitioner gets into position to apply the stretch, but first asks the client to contract the muscle to be stretched against a resistance (resisted movement) |
Reciprocal Inhibition | The practitioner gets into position to apply the stretch, but first asks the client to contract the target muscle’s antagonist against a resistance |
Active Assisted Stretch | The practitioner gets into position to apply the stretch and then directs the recipient to actively move the body part in the desired direction |
Hard End Feel | Occurs when bone meets bone (extension of the elbow) |
Firm End Feel | follows when the joint capsule and associated ligaments reach their elastic limits (extension of the elbow) |
Soft End Feel | results when surrounding soft tissues (muscle and tendons) limit the degree of movement (as in flexion at the elbow) |
Bursitis | Inflammation of the fluid sacks in synovial joints, |
Osteoporosis | Loss of bone tissue |
Horizontal Flexion | performed by moving the arm over the chest |
Overhead Stretch | performed one arm at a time or both arms at the same time |

Symphysis | A fibrous cartilaginous pad that connects two bones |
