IB PSYCHOLOGY VOCAB
Parts of the Brain and their Functions
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Frontal Lobe | -the largest lobes in the human brain -the most common region of injury in traumatic brain injury - important for voluntary movement, expressive language and for managing higher level executive functions (emotions, impulse control, problem solving, etc) |
Temporal Lobe | -helps you use your senses to understand and respond to the world around you -plays a key role in how you communicate with other people, your ability to access memories, use language and process emotions |
Parental Lobe | - primarily responsible for receiving and processing sensory input such as touch, pressure, heat, cold, and pain. -also involved in the perception of body awareness and the construction of a spatial coordinate system |
Occipital Lobe | -processes visual information received from the eyes -main functions of the occipital lobes include: Vision – The primary visual cortex in the occipital lobe interprets visual signals from the retinas of the eyes |
Cerebellum | -has special sensors that detect shifts in balance and movement. It sends signals for the body to adjust and move. -The cerebellum times muscle actions so that the body can move smoothly. - helps the body to learn movements that require practice |
Brain Stem | -It connects your brain to your spinal cord -sends messages to the rest of your body to regulate balance, breathing, heart rate and more |
