Examining the Microscopic structure of the Blood Vessels(Arteries)

Tunica Intima(interna) Is the inner layer
endothelium A thin membrane that lines the inside of the heart and blood vessels.
Tunica Media Is the middle layer
Tunica externa(adventitia) Is the outer Layer
Elastic arteries Those nearest the heart (aorta and pulmonary arteries) that contain much more elastic tissue in the tunica media than muscular arteries.
Elastic Fibers Essential extracellular matrix macromolecules comprising an elastin core surrounded by a mantle of fibrillin-rich microfibrils.
Muscular artery a medium-sized artery that draws blood from an elastic artery and branches into "resistance vessels" including small arteries and arterioles.
Medium-sized vein can be identified by the tunica adventitia (externa) being thicker than the tunica media and the absence of smooth muscle in the tunica adventitia region.
Atherosclerosis The accumulation off fatty deposits in the tunica intima of arteries
Arterioles Small arteries that deliver blood to capillary beds
Vasoconstriction The narrowing (constriction) of blood vessels by small muscles in their walls.
Vasodilation The widening of blood vessels as a result of the relaxation of the blood vessel's muscular walls.
Peripheral resistance The resistance of the arteries to blood flow.
Vein A blood vessel that carries blood to the heart from tissues and organs in the body.
Valve Prevent the backward flow of blood.
Varicose veins Swollen, twisted vein that lie just under the skin.
Continuous Capillaries The Smallest blood vessels that connect the arterial and venous circulatory networks
Fenestrated Capillaries Are cover by a thin Basal lamina
Sinusoids They are the most permeable capillaries
Microcirculation Is the circulation of the blood in the smallest blood vessels, the microvessels of the microvasculature present within organ tissues.
