Term | Definition |
---|---|
BMI | Body mass index; a measure of body fat based on height and weight |
Obesity | Having extra body fat with a BMI of 30 or more |
Colonoscopy | Endoscopic examination of the large bowel and the distal part of the small bowel with a small camera on a flexible tube passed through the anus |
Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) | Protein normally found at very low levels in the blood of adults that is elevated in people with colorectal cancer and certain other cancers |
Peptic ulcer | Open sore on the lining of the esophagus, stomach, or small intestine |
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) | Common disorder characterized by a group of symptoms that includes abdominal pain, bloating, and diarrhea or constipation without visible signs of disease or damage in the GI tract |
Antiemetic | Drug that prevents or reduces vomiting |
Laxative | Substance that loosens stools and promotes bowel movements |
Enema | Injection of fluid into the lower bowel via the rectum; intended to cleanse or empty the bowels |
Cleft lip/cleft palate | Opening or split in the roof of the mouth and/or the lip that occurs during development and interferes with speaking and feeding after birth |
Aphthous ulcer | Shallow, painful sore in the lining of the mouth or gums; also known as a canker sore |
Thrush | Candida infection of the mucus membranes of the mouth, throat, or other parts of the body; common in infants and young children |
Sialadenitis | Inflammation of the salivary gland |
Parotitis | Painful swelling of the parotid glands, most often caused by a viral infection such as mumps |
Dysphagia | Difficulty swallowing |
Diverticula | Pouches that form in the digestive tract; commonly associated with aging |
Periodontium | Set of connective tissues that help anchor teeth to the jaw |
Hiatal hernia | Condition called in which part of the stomach protrudes into the thoracic cavity through the diaphragm |
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) | Common condition in which acidic stomach contents move up into the esophagus and irritate its lining |
Gastritis | Inflammation of the stomach lining that often leads to pain, nausea, and/or vomiting |
Gastroenteritis | Inflammation of the stomach and intestines, typically resulting from bacterial toxins or viral infection, that causes vomiting and diarrhea. |
Caries | Decayed areas of a tooth or bone |
Duodenum | First part of the small intestine |
Helicobacter pylori | Gram-negative, spiral-shaped bacterium that can inhabit the stomach |
Dumping syndrome | Condition in which the stomach empties its contents into the small intestine too rapidly, resulting in symptoms such as nausea, diarrhea, fatigue, and dizziness |
Pyloric stenosis | Thickening of the pylorus that occurs most often in infants; causes forceful vomiting which can lead to dehydration |
Bulimia | Eating disorder characterized by binging, followed by purging, strict dieting, or extreme exercise |
