Module 4 Psych

TermDefinition
Neuroplasticity: is the brain's ability to change, most notably during childhood. Takes longer in adulthood. Can build pathways from experience
Neurons: of nervous system are called Neurons
Cell Body: contains nucleus is life center
Dendrites Branching extensions that receive and integrate messages sending them to cell body
Axon segmented neuron extension that passes messages TO other neurons or to muscles/glands
Myelin Sheath: Is Fatty tissue layer segmentally encasing axon speeds up neural impulses
Gilal Cells: support nourish and protect neurons
Refractory Period: is period of inactivity after a neuron fires (Action Potential)
Threshold: is level of stimulation required for action potential/neural impulse (Action Potential)
All or none response: Neuron's reaction of either firing or not firing (Action Potential)
Synapse: is the space between axon tip of sending neuron and the dendrite of the receiving neuron (How Neurons communicate)
Neurotransmitters: are chemical messengers that influence whether neuron will fire (How Neurons communicate)
Nerves: are bundled axons that form neural cables that connect CNS to our muscles, glands, and sensory organs. (Nervous system key terms)
Sensory Neurons: carry incoming information from body tissues and sensory receptors to the brain and spinal cord. (Nervous system key terms)
Reflexes: are simple automatic responses to a sensory stimulus. Some reactions happen before information makes it to your brain part of central nervous system
Agonist: increases a neurotransmitters action (How Neurons Communicate)
Antagonist: which decreases a Neurotransmitter action. (How Neurons Communicate
Endorphins: Natural, opiate-like Neurotransmitters linked to pain control and pleasure. (How Neurons Communicate)
Motor Neurons: carry outgoing information from the brain and spinal cord to the muscles and glands (nervous system key terms)
Interneurons: within the brain and spinal cord; process information between sensory and motor neurons. (nervous system key terms)
Brain: is a neural network of individual neurons is part of central nervous system
Spinal Cord: Is part of the central nervous system connects PNS to the brain

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
