Module 17 Psych
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Sensation: | is the process by which our sensory receptors and nervous system receive and represent stimulus energies from our environment. |
Perception | is the process in which our brain organizes and interprets sensory information, enabling us to recognize meaningful objects and events |
Transduction: | is the conversion of one form of energy into another takes sight, smell, etc... into neural impulses our brain can understand. |
Signal Detection Theory: | assumes there is no single absolute threshold. |
Bottom-up Processing: | Starts at sensory receptors and works up to higher levels of processing |
Top-Down Processing: | Constructs perceptions from sensory input by drawing on experience and expectations |
Psychophysics: | is the study of relationships between physical characteristics of stimuli and our psychological experiences of them. |
Absolute Threshold: | is the minimum stimulus energy needed to detect a particular stimulus 50% of the time. |
Subliminal: | is what is below one's threshold for conscious awareness. Subliminal messages are not that effective however they can be used in advertising. |
Difference Thresholds: | is the minimum difference between two stimuli required for detection 50% of the time |
Weber's Law: | is what is to be perceived as different, two stimuli must differ by a constant minimum percentage. |
Sensory Adaption: | is diminished sensitivity because of constant stimulation. you become less aware of a stimulus. It benefits you by being able to focus on environmental changes. |
Perceptual Set: | is the mental predisposition to perceive one thing and not another. These sets are developed through. Or can be based on Priming Or Stereotypes |
Schemas: | are formed through experience they can Organize and interpret unfamiliar information |
