Opsonization Opsonin coat the microbes then binds to the CR1 receptors of the neutrophils or monocytes. --> Rapid ingestion and destruction.
Absence of CR1 on phagocytes Defective Opsonization by C3b
Decay Accelerating Factor (DAF) or CD55 Prevents formation of C3 convertase: NO MAC!
CD59 or Membrane inhibitor of reactive lysis Inhibits MAC formation
DAF and CD59 are proteins that are linked to cell membranes on normal cell Glycophosphatidylinositol (GPI) anchor and Prevent complement activation
An acquired deficiency of the enzyme that creates GPI anchors Lysis of the normal cells.
