Human Body Systems

TermDefinition
Cardiovascular / Circulatory System Moves blood and nutrients around the body
Respiratory System Takes in oxygen and releases carbon dioxide through the lungs
Skeletal System Protects other organs and provides structure for body
Muscular System Moves the body
Excretory System Removes waste from body
Digestive System Processes food and breaks down nutrients
Immune System Fights off illness caused by pathogen
Circulatory AND Respiratory The blood picks up oxygen from lungs and sends it to the rest of the body. Blood picks up carbon dioxide from body and takes to lungs.
Circulatory AND Skeletal New blood cells are created in the bone marrow
Circulatory AND Muscular Energy and nutrients are delivered the the muscles by the blood vessels in the circulatory system.
Circulatory AND Excretory Blood collects waste from body and waste is filtered out by kidneys.
Circulatory AND Digestive After food is broken down by the digestive system, the circulatory system absorbs the nutrients to take to different parts of the body.
Nervous System Sends signals to and from the brain to respond to stimuli
Circulatory AND Immune White blood cells are sent to sick parts of the body through the circulatory system to fight off infections.
Circulatory AND Nervous Electrical stimuli are sent to the heart to keep it beating.
Respiratory AND Skeletal The rib bones protect the lungs.
Respiratory AND Muscular Both used directly in exercising.
Respiratory AND Excretory Lungs can be used to get rid of waste through coughing and the nose can be used to get rid of waste through sneezing.
Respiratory AND Digestive Both systems are needed to bring in the raw materials needed for cellular respiration (oxygen and glucose)
Respiratory AND Nervous Lungs send signals to brain to communicate when more oxygen is needed by the body.
Respiratory AND Immune The immune system tries to prevent pathogens from entering the rest of the body by trapping the pathogens in mucus in the nose and throat.
Skeletal AND Muscular The muscles move bones so the whole body can move.
Skeletal AND Digestive The teeth and jaw are used to mechanically digest food before swallowing.
Skeletal AND Nervous Nerves run throughout the bones to send pain signals if injury occurs.
Muscular AND Excretory There are muscles used to open up the bladder and anus to release waste.
Muscular AND Digestive The digestive system organs are made of smooth muscle that automatically work.
Muscular AND Nervous Muscles send signals to the brain to communicate the body's current position and the brain sends signals to muscles of where and how to move.
Excretory AND Digestive Once the digestive system processes food, the solid waste is sent through the excretory system to exit the body.
Excretory AND Nervous Excretory system sends signals to brain to tell human it is time to go to the bathroom.
Excretory AND Immune Once the immune system kills off pathogens. the excretory system gets rid of the pathogen waste (by coughing, sneezing, etc.)
Digestive AND Nervous Digestive system sends signals to nerves to tell the brain when the stomach is full.
Digestive AND Immune The immune system can attack pathogens in the stomach and intestines when food poisoning occurs.
Nervous AND Immune Nervous system sends signals to immune system to tell it to go fight off illness.
Levels of organization (smallest to largest) cell, tissue, organ, organ system, organism
Cells Basic unit of living things
Tissue A group of cells working together for a common purpose.
Organ A group of tissues working together for a common purpose.
Organ System A group of organs working together for a common purpose.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
