Effleurage | Glide, Stroke, Or touch lightly. |
Effects of Effleurage | Refluxive effect on circulation if less pressure is used and a more mechanical effect if deeper pressure is used. |
Effleurage is used to... | ...increase local venous and lymphatic return, to increase local circulation or to reduce edema. |
Effleurage Contraindications | Not used distal to an area of inflam., distal to an injury tin the acute and early subacute stage or distal to an area of infection. NO uncovered or covered open or contagious skin lesions. NO repeat on limbs w/ hypertension, Heart disease, varicose, edema |
Petrissage | Kneading |
Petrissage is used to... | Used after tissue is warmed up because of the increased pressure and focus of petrissage. |
Types of Petrissage include... | Muscle squeezing, stripping, wringing, picking up, skin rolling, kneading. |
Muscle Squeezing | Muscle is compressed between the palm & fingers or between both palms; the pressure is then directed slightly vertically. |
Muscle Stripping | The thumb, elbow, ulnar border of the hand or fingertips are used. Contours of muscles followed, often from the distal to proximal muscle insertion. |
Muscle Stripping is applied in what direction? | Along the fibre direction. |
Wringing | Each hand moves in opposite direction and then back. More pressure used when tissue is lifted and torqued, & less @ beginning and end of movement. |
Picking Up | Fingers are thenar eminence or the palms of hands squeeze the muscle, lifting it up from the underlying tissue using a verticle pressure. |
Skin Rolling | Skin is lifted between thumb & fingers and gently rolled over area. |
Kneading | Using the thumb, fingertips, palmar surface or ulnar border of the hand or forearm, the therapist performs short, rhythmical unidirectional or circular movements. |
Effects of Petrissage | Affect local circulation while being applied. If increased drag is applied, muscle fibre & connective tissue adhesions can be loosened. If only the skin layer is engaged, only the superficial fascia is addressed. |
Contraindications of Petrissage | W/ severely atrophied or atonic muscles, pet. is not used bcuz of the drag could damage tissue. Not used over mod. to severe varicosities. |
What treats trigger points in a muscle belly? | Repetitive muscle stripping and skin rolling |
Vibrations are also knows as... | ... oscillations |
Static Vibrations | continuous contact with the tissue w/o sliding over the skin |
Running Vibrations | keep the hand in continuous contact w/ the tissue & then vibrating hand glides over the skin |
Effects of Vibrations | useful in painful areas & those which are hyposensitive or need sensory re-education (cast removal). Fine vibrations are soothing. |
When prolonged coarse or fine vibrations are applied to the thorax, they can... | assist in mechanically loosening the mucus present in respiratory conditions. |
What can be used to decrease muscle tone if they are applied to a muscle tendon for up to 30 secs? | Vibrations |
Tapotement | rap, drum, pat |
Pincement | A form of light tapotement. Tissue is plucked between thumb & forefingers. |
Tapping | A form of light tapotement. The tissue is tapped w/ the fingertips |
Hacking | A form of heavy tapotement. Performed w/ the ulnar border of the hand. |
Clapping or Cupping | A form of heavy tapotement. |
Beating | A form of heavy tapotement. The hand is held in a loose fist. Beating can be performed using the extensor surface of the phalanges of the digits (like rapping the knuckles on a door) or the ulnar surface of the fist (as if pounding on a table) |
Effects of Tapotement | Loosen mucus, increase local circulation, stimulates, increases sympathetic nervous system firing; used for fatigue. Temp. increase tone. |
