Endocrine Chapter 6

Endocrine System for Massage Therapy

QuestionAnswer
Endocrine System comprised of cells, glads, tissues that secrete substances into the internal environment.
Endocrine Glands Secrete directly into internal environment. Like a sponge.
Exocrine Glands Secrete thru ducts (sweat glands and stomach acid). Like a toothpaste tube.
Hormones Chemicals that w/the nervous system help regulate body functions & manage homeostasis.
Are Hormones secreted by endocrine or exocrine glands? Endocrine
Target Cells Cells that hormones act on
Secreted into interstitial fluid, picked up by the bloodstream, delivered to target organ where it binds to the receptor of the cell Hormone
Glands of the system (9) Adrenal, Ovaries, Pancreas, Parathyroid, Pineal, Pituitary, Testes, Thymus, Thyroid
FUNCTIONS Regulate metabolic processes; rate of reaction, get stuff thru membrane, water/electrolyte balance, BP. Regulation of most autonomic functions involving metabolism, growth, & developement. Regulated by (neg) feedback loops
2 main types of hormone chemicals Steroids-synthesized from cholestrol (a lipid), Non-steroids - usually from a protein.
How these hormones work Hormones released from a gland into interstitial space Goes to bloodstream Bloodstream takes hormone to target organ Hormone binds to specific receptor on cell
Hypothalamus Tells the Pituitary to release hormones. Pituitary releases hormones that stimulate other glands to release hormones. These are called tropic hormones - Nervous System
Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) Goes to thyroid Stimulates the release of T3 (triiodothyronine) & T4 (thyroxine) These hormones regulate metabolism Hyper/Hypo thyroidism
Human Growth Hormone (hGH) Not a tropic hormone Goes to bones/mm’s & liver Causes cells to grow/divide faster, metabolism Examples: can take in pill form but it is not good for you. BGH bovine growth hormone in milk
Adrenocorticotropic Hormone (ACTH) Tropic Goes to the adrenal cortex of the adrenal glands Stimulates adrenals to release corticoid hormones Released under stress (metabolism of glucose, decreases inflammation
Posterior Pituitary Anti-Diuretic Hormone (ADH) Goes to kidney and causes them to save water Diet coke, alcohol & caffeine are diuretics Cause you to loose water
Adrenals Norepinephrine/Epinephrine Aldosterone Saves Na+ (to indirectly save water) in the kidney When water is conserved BP goes up
Pancreas Insulin Decreases glucose levels in the blood Diabetes-state of hyperglycemia Glucagon Increase glucose levels in the blood
Pineal Melatonin Regulates circadian rhythms Helps you fall asleep Released in the absence of light
Fight or Flight Response Fight or Flight Response Done by sympathetic portion of the autonomic NS Alarm reaction Adrenal medulla releases hormones epinephrine &norepinephrine
What Happens during Fight or Flight? Heart rate, glucose level, BP increases Dilates air passages in bronchi to help with short-term stress
Stages of Fight or Flight ALARM Resistance Exhaustion
Long-term stress Glucocorticoids released (cortisol) Decreases inflammation, extra energy Resistance stage. If this continues too long, you get exhausted Get sick Autoimmune disorders
