Vygotsky's theory focused on importance of social interactions with other people, typically more highly skilled children and adults
Scaffolding – process in which a more skilled learner gives help to less skilled learner, reducing the amount of help as the less skilled learner becomes more capable
Zone of proximal development Vygotsky’s concept of the difference between what a child can do alone versus what that child can do with the help of a teacher.
Erikson's theory Each stage is an emotional crises, or a turning point, in personality, and the crises in each stage must be successfully met for normal, healthy psychological development
Trust versus mistrust based on whether or not their needs such as food and comfort are met.
Autonomy versus shame and doubt Toddlers realize that they can direct their own behavior
Initiative versus guilt Preschoolers are challenged to control their own behavior. They display curiosity about the world.
Industry versus inferiority a feeling of competence arising from their work and effort
Identity versus role confusion who or what they want to be in terms of occupation, beliefs, attitudes, and behavior patterns
Identity diffusion – these adolescents have not yet gone through the identity crises and have not thought about what they want to be. They are unconcerned and even cynical about their identity.
Foreclosure – they have committed to an identity without going through a crises. Example – adopted the values of peers or parents
Moratorium – want to establish a clear sense of identity, but have not done it yet
Identity achievement – have gone through an identity crises and resolved it and emerged with a coherent set of values
Intimacy versus isolation to be able to share who they are with another person in a close committed relationship
Generativity versus stagnation The challenge is to be creative, productive, and nurturant of the next generation
Ego integrity versus despair The issue is whether a person will reach wisdom, spiritual tranquility, a sense of wholeness, & acceptance of his or her life
