Democracy A system of government in which people freely choose in elections who will govern them
Suffrage The right to vote
Communism A social and economic ideology that property, production, and distribution of goods and services should be owned by the public, labour force should be organized for the benefit of all members
Capitalism An economic system in which the production and distribution of goods are owned privately or by shareholders in corporations who have invested their money in hope of making a profit
Fascism An authoritarian system of government that exercises complete power, suppresses opposition often through use of force, and encourages nationalism and racism
Governor General A person who represents the British crown in Canada
Head of State The Queen
Head of Government The prime minister
Parliament Is a legislature, especially in those countries whose system of government is based on the Westminster system modeled after that of the United Kingdom
Riding/ Electoral Ridings A geographical area of a given size or population used a unit in elections
Constituent A voter in a riding
Member of Parliament Is a representative of the voters to a parliament
House of Commons The first legislative body of Parliament whose members are elected
Senate The second legislative body in Parliament consisting of appointed members whose role is to give sober second thought to passage of bills
Executive Branch The branch of government that enacts the laws
Legislative Branch The branch that makes the laws
Cabinet MPs who occupy ministerial position
Direct Democracy A form of democracy where citizens directly vote on issues
Representative Democracy A form of democracy where an elected official represents a riding
Constitutional Monarchy A democracy where the Queen/King is the head of state
Federal System A political concept in which a group of members is bound together by convenant
Prime Minister The head of government
Vote of non-Confidence a vote that indicates the Pm no longer has the support of the house
Caucus The members of a party
Deputy Minister The secondary head of a department
Backbencher An MP without a cabinet position or significant post
Party Whip Maintains party discpline
Speaker of the House Maintains decorum in the house
Mace A ceremonial item that identifies that parliament is in session
Shadow Cabinet The opposition's equivalent to the governments ministers
Public Servants People who work for the government
Socialism A theory that advocates equal power, cooperative management, and public ownership of production and resources.
Liberalism Belief in liberty and equal rights. Supporters believe in human rights, capitalism, fair elections, and free trade. It's ideas are widely accepted by a variety of parties.
Libertarianism A political philosophy focused on individual liberties, and minimilizing the state.
Bill A proposed law that is put under consideration of legislature.
Private member's Bill A proposed law by a backbencher or someone who does not hold government office.
Prime minister's Office An office composed of the Prime minister and his top advisors and staff.
Privy Council Body that acts as advisors to the head of state.
Patronage Financial, or encouraging aid that one group bestows on another
Lobbyists An activist paid by an interest group to promote their interests to legislatures
Free Vote a type of vote when a legislative body is allowed to vote from individual interests or personal conscience.
Order-In-Council A law that is passed without a vote from parliament, and is given assent from the governor general.
Cabinet Solidarity The system that all members of cabinet must support the cabinets decisions.
Campaigning When a politician uses an organized effort to gather public favour and influence.
