Senatorial Courtesy the presidential custom to submitting the names of prospective appointees for approval to senators from the state in which the appointees are to work.
Judicial Restraint judicial philosophy proposing that judges should interpret the constitution to reflect what the framers intended (conservatively)
Judicial Activism judicial philosophy that judges should interpret the constitution to reflect current conditions and values. (Liberally)
Writ of Certiorari a formal writ used to bring a case before the Supreme Court
Amicus Curiae “friend of the court” filed by the individual or organization to present arguments in addition to those presented by the immediate party to a case
Opinion of the Court an opinon explaining the decision of the Supreme Court or any other appellate court
Dissenting Opinion an opinion disagreeing with the court
Concurring Opinion an opinion that agrees with the court but differs on the reasoning
