Basic Strokes
The five basic swedish massage strokes
Question | Answer |
---|---|
Effleurage | A light or deep stroking or gliding movement following bodily contours which dynamically affect the body mechanically and/or reflexively. |
Effleurage Variations | Deep or light, fast or slow, long or short, and nerve strokes. |
Effleurage Practical Applications | Used to apply oil, to adapt the body to touch, to evaluate the client, to evaluate their tissues, to facilitate transitions between strokes, and to drain the area after other manipulations. |
Effleurage Physiological Effects (Light) | Light effleurage is all reflexive, relaxation, sedation, relieves pain, increases circulation both venous and lymphatic, decrease blood pressure and pulse, and reduces edema. |
Effleurage Physiological Effects (Deep) | All mechanical effects, increases circulation both venous and lymphatic, stretches and broadens fibers, and reduces edema. |
Petrissage | A lifting, stretching or squeezing movement used to lift the soft tissue away from the adjacent structures. |
Petrissage Variations | Fast or slow, skin rolling, kneading, big C little C, lifting, picking-up (stretch), fulling (The flesh is grasped between the fingers and palm of the hands). |
Petrissage Physiological Effects | All mechanical effects, increases circulation venous/lymphatic, stretches and broadens fibers, milks the muscles for metabolic wastes, breaks up adhesions. |
Friction | Compression and/or moving superficial tissue over and against deeper tissue or bone using little or NO oil. Applying pressure into the depth of the tissue, with the depth determined by the practitioner's intention. |
Friction Variations | Stationary, linear, circular, heat rubs, chucking, wringing, and cross fiber. |
Friction Physiological Effects | All mechanical effects. Breaks up adhesions, spreads and stretches fibers, generates heat, increases circulation (local hyperemia), releases tension and improve peristalisis in the hollow muscular abdominal digestive organs, relieves pain. |
Vibration | A rhythmic shaking, trembling or jostling of the tissue or body part. |
Vibration Variations | Stationary, traveling, may include traction, varying depth and speed or rate of stroke. |
Vibration Physiological Effects | All reflexive effects, relaxes muscles, increases circulation, stimulate organ function, stimulate synovial activity, relieves pain. |
Tapotement | A rhythmic, intermittent striking or percussion of the tissue. |
Tapotement Variations | Strokes vary from light to deep, slow to fast, tapping, pincemont, hacking, slapping beating, and cupping. |
Tapotement Physiological Effects (Deep) | All mechanical effects, increases circulation, creates local hyperemia, enhance muscle tone. |
Tapotement Physiological Effects (Light) | All reflexive effects, sedation and/or relaxation of tissue. |
