Threatening Intellectual Environments

What is a stereotype? A belief about personal attributes based on group membership
What is a self-fulfilling prophecy? A tendency for expectations to foster the behavior that is consistent with the expectations
Describe a threatening intellectual environment An environment that activates a negative stereotype about intellectual ability. Not a situation of harassment. We tend to internalize cultural stereotypes
What is stereotype threat? Disruptive concern that one will be evaluated based on a negative stereotype
What is tokenism? Minority or token status is distracting and results in cognitive deficits
What is distinctiveness? Minority status can evoke a sense of group identity that affects performance, with more "distinctiveness" causing a bigger effect on performance
Describe the stereotype threat vs. tokenism study Sample was all female participants with male cofederates. DV: performance on problem solving task. IV1: nature of the task (math and verbal GRE questions). IV2: group composition (same-gender, or mixed-gender minorirty).
Explain the design of the study It was a 2x2 between-groups design. 1. verbal test all women, 2. verbal test 2 men & 1 woman, 3. math test all women, 4. math test 2 men 1 woman. Each participant only participates in in one condition.
