States of Consciousness

slow-wave sleep | sleep stages 3 and 4, which are accomplained by slow, regular heartbeat: and reduced blood pressure |
REM sleep | a stages of sleep in which brain activity and other functions resemble the waking state but that is accompained by rapid eye movements and virtual muscld paralysis |
REM sleep 2 | also known as paradoxical sleep |
REM sleep 3 | muscles are nearly paralyzed, but the heart rate, breathing, and blood pressure is similar to when you are awake |

Sudden infant death syndrom (SIDS) | a disorder in which a sleeping baby stops breathing and dies |
nightmares | frightening dream that takes palce during REM sleep |
night terrors | horrific dream that causes rapid awakening from stage 3 or 4 sleep and intense fear for up to 30 minutes |
sleepwalking | a phenomenon primarily occuring in non-REM sleep in which the person walk while sleeping |
REM behavior disorder | a sleep disorder in which a person does not lose muscle tone during REM sleep, allowing the person to act out dreams |
circadian rhythm | cycles that repeats about one day |
jet lag | a syndrome of fatigue, irritablilty, inattention, and sleeping problems caused by air travel across several time zones |
