Psychology The scientific study of behavior and mental processes
Behavior Everything we do that can be directly observed
Mental Process The thoughts, feelings, and motives that each of us experiences privately but that cannot be observed directly (thinking, feeling, memory)
Why is psychology considered a science? Psychology uses systematic methods to observe human behaviors and draw conclusions
What are the goals of psychological science? The goals of psychological science are to describe, predict, and explain behavior.
Science The use of systematic methods to observe the natural world
What are the four attributes at the core of psychology? Critical Thinking,Skepticism,Objectivity, and Curiosity
Critical Thinking The process of reflecting deeply and actively, asking questions, and evaluating evidence.
Skepticism People who challenge whether or not a suppose fact is true
Pseudoscience Information that is couched in scientific terminology but is not supported by sound scientific research
Objectivity Being open to evidence.It means being able to see things how they really are and not how we would wish them to be. Best way to be objective is to use the empirical method.
Empirical Method Gaining knowledge through observation of events, the collection of data, and logical reasoning.
Clinical Psychologists Specialize in studying and treating psychological disorders
What type of science is Psychology? A general science
Psychology is a general science because...? It addresses all sides of human experiences
Philosophy The rational investigation of the underlying principles of being and knowledge
Who believed that the mind and the body were linked? Socrates, Plato, Aristotle
Whole believed that the mind and the body were separate? Descartes
Descartes..... Studied emotion
Aristotle..... Studied happiness
Structuralism focuses on identifying the structure of the human mind
Who is the founder of structuralism? William Wundt
Who created the first psychology laboratory? William Wundt, 1879 @ the University of Leipzig. This is where modern psychology was born.
What did Wundt use this laboratory for? He used it to measure mental processes using introspection (looking within)
Is introspection a scientific method? Yes because it uses systematic, detailed self reports, required of the person in a controlled laboratory setting.
