Question
Answer
CN I   OLFACTORY only has a special sensory fxn. of smell; no autonomic-parasymp. fxn. exits through the cribiform plate
🗑
CN II   OPTIC only has a special sensory fxn. of vision; no autonomic-parasymp. fxn. exits the optic canal
🗑
CN III   OCCULOMOTOR motor fxn. to 5 of the 7 extra-ocular eye muscles autonomic-parasymp. = pupil constriction & lens accommodation no general or special sensory fxn. exits the superior orbital fissure
🗑
CN IV   TROCHLEAR motor fxn. to 1 out of the 7 extra-ocular no sensory (general or special), or autonomic-parasymp. fxn. exits the superior orbital fissure
🗑
CN V   TRIGEMINAL 3 Branches Opthalmic Maxillary Mandibular
🗑
CN V Opthalmic Branch   general sensory fxn. to the skin above the eyes (supraorbital n.) and the cornea exits the supraorbital fissure
🗑
CN V Maxillary Branch   general sensory fxn. to the skin below the eyes to the lips (infraorbital n.), and the upper teeth exits the foramen rotundum
🗑
CN V Mandibular Branch   motor fxn. to the muscles of mastication general sensory function to the skin below the lips (mental n.), lower teeth (inferior alveolar n.), and the anterior 2/3 of the tongue (lingual n.) exits the foramen ovale
🗑
CN VI   ABDUCENS motor fxn. to 1 out of the 7 extra-ocular muscles exits the superior orbital fissure
🗑
CN VII   FACIAL motor fxn. to muscles of expression gen. sensory to ear canal/auricle special sensory fxn. is taste: ant. 2/3 of tongue (chorda tympani) autonomic-parasymp. = lacrimal glands, submandibular & sublingual salivary glands exits int. acoustic meat
🗑
CN VIII   VESTIBULOCOCHLEAR AKA-acoustic nerve special sensory fxn. to hearing & balance exits internal acoustic meatus
🗑
CN IX   GLOSSOPHARYNGEAL supplies motor fxn. to the pharyngeal muscles general sensory to the wall of the pharynx & post. 1/3 of the tongue special sensory fxn. of taste to the post. 1/3 of tongue autonomic-parasymp = parotid salivary gland exits jugular for
🗑
CN X   VAGUS supplies motor fxn. to the pharyngeal & laryngeal muscles general sensory supply to ear canal special sensory fxn. is taste: base of tongue autonomic-parasymp = thoracic & abdominal viscera exits jugular foramen
🗑
CN XI   SPINAL ACCESSORY supplies motor fxn. to the trapezius & sternocleidomastoid muscles exits jugular foramen
🗑
CN XII   HYPOGLOSSAL supplies motor fxn. to the muscles of the tongue exits the hypoglossal canal
🗑
CN I & II   technically tracts of the brain
🗑

Sensory versus Motor   Some = I Say = II Money = III Matters = IV But = V (all 3 branches) My = VI Brother = VII Says = VIII Big = IX Brains = X Matter = XI Most = XII
🗑
CN with Motor Function   supply skeletal/voluntary muscles of head have neuronal cell bodies located in the brainstem nuclei are within the brainstem (motor nucleus of CN VII, a discrete cluster or aggregation of motor neurons; NOT continuous with others
🗑
CN with Sensory Function   nerves that supply sensory info coming from the skin in and around the head have neuronal cell bodies located in the ganglia outside the CNS (i.e. 5th CN ganglia, 7th CN ganglia) some do have particular names, but typically it's described as a number
🗑
CN with Autonomic Function   some CN have autonomic function CNs III, VII, IX, X this autonomic function is parasympathetic because CNs only carry parasympathetic nerve fibers (i.e. the glands in and around the head -- tear glands, salivary glands, mucous glands
🗑

Review the information in the table. When you are ready to quiz yourself you can hide individual columns or the entire table. Then you can click on the empty cells to reveal the answer. Try to recall what will be displayed before clicking the empty cell.

To hide a column, click on the column name.

To hide the entire table, click on the "Hide All" button.

You may also shuffle the rows of the table by clicking on the "Shuffle" button.

Or sort by any of the columns using the down arrow next to any column heading.
If you know all the data on any row, you can temporarily remove it by tapping the trash can to the right of the row.
