| Decrease of an angle (usually in the sagittal plane) | flexion |
| Bending of trunk (vertebral column) to the side | lateral flexion |
| Increase of angle | extension |
| Extension beyond anatomical position | hyperextension |
| Movement away from the midline (usually in the frontal plane) | Abduction |
| Movement toward the midline | adduction |
| Movement of the palm of hand anteriorly or upward | supination |

| Movement of ankle joint so dorsum of foot becomes closer to anterior surface of leg (standing on heels) | dorsiflexion |
