Stratum LayerCharacteristics
stratum basale deepest layer; single layer of cuboidal or columnar cells; cells receive nutrition; undergoes constant division; pushes up to body surface
stratum spinosum many keratinocytes with spiny appearance, some keratin
stratum granulosum three to five rows of flat cells; site of keratohyalin and keratin formation
stratum lucidum only in thick skin of palms and soles; consists of clear, flat, dead cells; cells contain eleidin
stratum corneum outmost layer of epidermis; 25-30 rows of flat, dead cells will with keratin; continuously shed and replaced
