Stratum Layer | Characteristics |

stratum basale | deepest layer; single layer of cuboidal or columnar cells; cells receive nutrition; undergoes constant division; pushes up to body surface |
stratum spinosum | many keratinocytes with spiny appearance, some keratin |
stratum granulosum | three to five rows of flat cells; site of keratohyalin and keratin formation |
stratum lucidum | only in thick skin of palms and soles; consists of clear, flat, dead cells; cells contain eleidin |
stratum corneum | outmost layer of epidermis; 25-30 rows of flat, dead cells will with keratin; continuously shed and replaced |
