Cells and Function | Role in Disease |

red blood cells: oxygen and carbon dioxide transport | too few causes anemia and too many cause polycythemia |
platelets: essential for clotting | too few causes clotting malfunctions, bleeding, and easy bruising |
neutrophils: phagocytosis | too many could be due to bacterial infection, inflammation, or due to leukemia |
eosinophils: some role in allergic response | too many may result from allergic reaction, parasitic infections |
basophils: possible role in allergic response | too many may result from allergic reaction, parasitic infections |
lymphocytes: produce antibodies; destroy foreign cells | atypical lymphocytes present in infectious mononucleosis; too many may be dues to leukemia |
monocytes: phagocytosis; differentiate in tissues to form macrophages | may increase in monocytic leukemia, tuberculosis, fungal infections |
