Types of muscles in the body
Term | Definition |

Two general classifications of muscle | voluntary and involuntary muscles |
Voluntary muscles | muscle whose action is normally controlled by an individual's will. |
Involuntary muscles | a muscle that contracts without conscious control and found in walls of internal organs such as stomach and intestine and bladder and blood vessels. (excludes the heart) |
Three main muscles of the muscle system | skeletal, smooth, and cardiac muscles |
skeletal muscle | a muscle that is connected to the skeleton to form part of the mechanical system that moves the limbs and other parts of the body. Is also another term for STRIATED muscle. |
smooth muscle | generally forms the supporting tissue of blood vessels and hollow internal organs, such as the stomach, intestine, and bladder. Under involuntary control. |
cardiac muscle | A type of muscle tissue that is found only in the heart and is distinguishable from the two other forms of muscle. It is striated but involuntary. |
