Fiction Vocabulary

TermDefinition
climax When the main problem reaches its peak or turning point.
rising action The important complications that move the plot along.
falling action The events that take place AFTER the climax and lead to the resolution.
exposition When the main characters, setting and details are introduced.
resolution The main conflict is resolved or when the story ends.
theme The lesson the main character learned that we can all relate to.
protagonist Usually the main character in the story.
antagonist The character that keeps the main character from achieving a goal.
point of view The person telling the story.
author's purpose Writing to persuade, inform/describe or entertain.
conflict Can involve self, other characters, nature and/or society.
plot The parts of a fiction story.
