Synovial Joint

Parts of a synovial joint

TermDefinition
Joint capsule connective tissue that encloses each joint and is continuous with the periosteum of the bones.
Articular cartilage a smooth layer of hyaline cartilage that protects the bone surfaces.
Synovial membrane connective tissue that lines the inner surface of capsules of synovial joints.
Synovial fluid Thick, colorless fluid that is secreted by the membrane that lines the joint cavity.
Bursa small sacs that are filled with synovial fluid that lie in areas subject to stress and help to ease movement over and around the joints.
Meniscus a C shaped pad of cartilage in the knee that acts as a shock absorber.
