Term | Definition |

Cecum | first 5 to 8cm of the large intestine. A blind pouch located in the lower right quadrant of the abdomen |
Mucosa | ;The innermost layer of the GI tract that faces the lumen. |
Submucosa | layer of the digestive tube that is composed of connective tissue that is thicker than the mucosal layer |
Hard palate (mouth) | Consist of four bones: two maxillae and two palatines. |
Tongue | A solid mass of skeletal muscle components covered by a mucous membrane |
Soft palate (mouth) | forms a partition between the mouth and nasopharynx, is made of muscle in the shape of an arch |
Lips | covered by skin on the outside and mucous membrane on the inside. |
Muscularis | Is a thick layer of muscle tissue that wraps around the submucosa |
Serosa | is the outermost layer of the GI wall, made of serous membrane. |
Digestion | The complete process of altering the physical and chemical composition of ingested food material so that it can be absorbsed and used by the body |
