Mr. G’s Cardiovascular Diseases

TermDefinition
Anemia A disease condition with an inadequate number of erythrocytes, low hemoglobin or both.
Aneurysm A ballooning out of, or sac-like formation on, an artery wall.
Arteriosclerosis A hardening or thickening of the arterial walls resulting in a loss of elasticity and contractility.
Atherosclerosis Fatty plaques are deposited on the wall of the arteries.
Congestive Heart Failure A condition that occurs when the heart does not beat adequately to supply the blood needs of the body.
Embolus A foreign substance floating throughout the blood. May be air, fat, a blood clot or similiar.
Hemophilia A genetic condition occurring mostly in males causing the blood not to clot.
Hypertension High blood pressure. A systolic BP over 140 and a diastolic over 90
Leukemia Cancer of the bone marrow or lymph tissue. Results in a high number of immature and abnormal leukocytes.
Myocardial Infarction (MI or AMI) heart attack Occurs when there is a blockage of the coronary arteries resulting in a lack of blood to the heart muscle.
Phlebitis Inflammation of a vein, frequently in the leg
Varicose Veins Gnarled dilated veins that have lost elasticity and cause stasis, or decreased venous blood flow.
