Neutrophils | White Blood Cell Cellular Defense - phagocytosis of small pathogenic microorganism Life Span - hours to 3 days |
Basophil | White Blood Cell Secretes heparin (anticoagulant) and histamine Life Span - hours to 3 days |
Eosinophil | White Blood Cell Cellular Defense - some phagocytosis; chemical attack of large pathogenic microorganisms (such as protozoa) and parasitic worms; helps regulate allergic reactions and other inflammatory responses Life Span - 10 to 12 days |
Lymphocyte | White Blood Cell Humoral defense - secretes antibodies; involved in immune system response and regulation Life Span - days to years |
Monocyte | White Blood Cell Capable of migrating out of the blood to enter tissue spaces as a macrophage - an aggressive phagocytic cell capable of ingesting bacteria, cellular debris, and cancerous cells Life Span - months |
Platelets | Releases clot-activating substances and helps in formation of actual blood clot by forming platelet plugs Life Span - 7 to 10 days |
Lymph | is clear, watery-appearing fluid found in the lymphatic vessels |
