endosteum | membrane lining the medullary cavity of a bone |
medullary cavity | cavity within the shaft of the long bones, filled with bone marrow |
articular cartilage | a gristle-like substance on bones where they articulate (join) |
joint capsule | sac enclosing the articulating ends of bones forming a synovial joint |
striated muscle | voluntary muscle attached to the skeleton; also called skeletal muscle |
tendon | a band of fibrous tissue that connects muscle to bone |
frontal plane | vertical division of the body into front(anterior) and back(posterior) portions; also called coronal plane |
transverse plane | horizontal division of the body into upper and lower portions; also called horizontal plane |
dorsal | back of the body; also called posterior |
superior | situated above another structure, toward the head; also called cephalic |
proximal | toward the beginning or origin of a structure; for example, the proximal aspect of the femur (thigh bone) is the area closest to where it attaches to the hip |
supine | horizontal recumbent; lying flat on the back ("on the spine") |
eversion | turning outward, that is, of a foot |
hypotonia | reduced muscle tone or tension |
tetany | tension; prolonged, continuos muscle contraction |
arthritis | inflammation of the joints characterized by pain, swelling, redness, warmth, and limitation of motion |
bunion | swelling of the joint at the base of the great toe |
fracture | broken or cracked bone |
spiral fracture | bone break in which the fracture line is helical, usually resulting from a twisting injury |
myositis | inflammation of muscle |
osteosarcoma | type of malignant bone tumor |
rickets | osteomalacia in children, causes bone deformity |
kyphosis | anteriorly concave curvature of the thoracic spine (humped-back condition) |
spondylosis | stiff, immobile condition of vertebrae caused by joint degernation |
arthroscopy | procedure using an arthroscope to examine, diagnose, and repair a joint from within |
