Anatomical Term.

Anatomical Terminology

TermDefinition
Anatomical Position the body is in a standing (erect) position, with arms at the sides, and palms turned forward.
Bilateral Symmetry (Midline) the body being divided down the middle, creating two symmetrical sides. (left & right side are mirror images of one another)
Medial towards the midline (bilateral) of the body.
Lateral towards the sides of the body or away from the midline (bilateral) of the body.
Lateral The arms are in a medial or lateral position?
Medial The belly button is in a medial or lateral position?
Proximal towards or nearest the trunk of the body or nearest the point of origin of one of its parts.
Distal away from or farthest from the trunk or the point of origin of a body part.
Proximal (thigh is nearest the trunk of the body) The thigh is proximal or distal to the foot?
Distal (foot is farthest away from the trunk and thigh) The foot is proximal or distal to the thigh?
Superior towards the head (upper or above)
Inferior towards the feet (lower or below)
Superior (above) The lung are location superior or inferior to the diaphragm?
Inferior (below) The stomach is located superior or inferior to the diaphragm?
Anterior means front or in front of
Posterior means back or in back of
Anterior (front side) The nose is anterior or posterior on the body?
Posterior (back side) The shoulder blades are anterior or posterior on the body?
Superficial means nearer the surface of the body
Deep means farther away from the body surface
Superficial The skin is superficial or deep to the muscles?
Deep The bone of the arm is superficial or deep to the muscles?
Ipsilateral means same side
contralateral means opposite side
Supine means body is lying down with face upward. (laying on back)
Prone means the body is lying with face down. (laying on belly)
Lumen the hollow area of any organ
Central means near the center
Peripheral means around the boundary
Central (center of the body) The central nervous system (brain & spinal cord) are central or peripheral?
Peripheral (outer boundary of the body) The nerves of the muscles, skin and other organs are peripheral or central?
Medullary an inner region or core of an organ
Cortical an outer region or layer of an organ
Basal refers to the base or widest part of an organ
Apical refers to the narrow tip of an organ.
