Anatomy Week 1-5

Anatomy: is the study of the structure of an organism and the relationship of its parts.
What are the most important characteristics of human life? Responsiveness, conductivity, growth, respiration, digestion, absorption, secretion, excretion, circulation, and reproduction.
What are the levels of organization? Chemical, organelle, cellular, tissue, organ, system, and organism.
Superior: towards the head
Inferior: towards the feet
Anterior: front/in front of
Posterior: back/in back of
Ventral: toward the belly
Dorsal: toward the back
Medial: toward the midline
Lateral: toward the side of the body
Proximal: toward the trunk of the body
Distal: away from the trunk
Superficial: nearer the surface
Deep: farther away from the body surface
Atoms are composed of what types of particles? Protons, neutrons, and electrons.
What are the major elements in the human body? Oxygen, carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, calcium, phosphorus, potassium, sulfur, sodium, chlorine, and magnesium.
Cytoplasm: is the gel-like substance that composes a large portion of the inside of the cell.
Nucleus: is one of the largest cell structures that occupies the central portion of the cell.
What are the 4 main types of tissue? Epithelial, connective, muscle, and nervous tissue.
What specific functions does epithelial tissue have in the body? Protection, sensory functions, secretion, absorption, and excretion.
The two primary layers of the skin are? The epidermis and the dermis.
Name the layers of the epidermis from deepest to most superficial. Stratum Basale, Stratum Spinosum, Stratum Granulosum, Stratum Lucidum, and Stratum Corneum.
What are 5 major roles bone has in the human body? Support, protection, movement, mineral storage, and hematopoiesis.
