cell | the basic unit of structure and function in living things |
tissue | a group of similar cells that perform the same function |
organ | a body structure that is composed of different kinds of tissues that work together |
organ system | a group of organs that work together, performing major functions |
stimulus | any change or signal in the environment that can make an organism react in some way |
response | an action or change in behavior that occurs as a result of a stimulus |
stress | the reaction of a person's body to potentially threatening, challenging, or disturbing events |
homeostasis | the conditions in which an organisms internal environment is kept stable in spite of changes in the external environment |
digestion | the process that breaks down complex molecules of food into smaller nutrient molecules |
absorption | the process by which nutrient molecules pass through the wall of the digestive system into the blood |
saliva | the fluid released from glands in the mouth that plays a role in both mechanical and chemical digestion |
enzyme | a type of protein that speeds up a chemical reaction in a living thing |
epiglottis | a flap of tissue that seals off the windpipe and prevents food from entering the lungs |
esophagus | a muscular tube that connects the mouth to the stomach |
mucus | a thick, slippery substance produced by the body |
stomach | an organ in the form of a muscular pouch where food is broken down; located in the abdomen |
peristalsis | waves of smooth muscle contractions that move food through the esophagus toward the stomach |
small intestine | the part of the digestive system in which most chemical digestion takes place |
liver | the largest organ inside the body; it plays a role in many body processes, such as producing bile for the digestive system |
bile | a substance produced by the liver that breaks up fat chemicals |
villi | tiny finger-shaped structures that cover the inner surface of the small intestine and provide a large surface area through which digested food is absorbed |
large intestine | the last section of the digestive system, where water is absorbed into the bloodstream and the remaining material is eliminated from the body |
gallbladder | the organ that stores bile after it is produced by the liver |
