cell the basic unit of structure and function in living things
tissue a group of similar cells that perform the same function
organ a body structure that is composed of different kinds of tissues that work together
organ system a group of organs that work together, performing major functions
stimulus any change or signal in the environment that can make an organism react in some way
response an action or change in behavior that occurs as a result of a stimulus
stress the reaction of a person's body to potentially threatening, challenging, or disturbing events
homeostasis the conditions in which an organisms internal environment is kept stable in spite of changes in the external environment
digestion the process that breaks down complex molecules of food into smaller nutrient molecules
absorption the process by which nutrient molecules pass through the wall of the digestive system into the blood
saliva the fluid released from glands in the mouth that plays a role in both mechanical and chemical digestion
enzyme a type of protein that speeds up a chemical reaction in a living thing
epiglottis a flap of tissue that seals off the windpipe and prevents food from entering the lungs
esophagus a muscular tube that connects the mouth to the stomach
mucus a thick, slippery substance produced by the body
stomach an organ in the form of a muscular pouch where food is broken down; located in the abdomen
peristalsis waves of smooth muscle contractions that move food through the esophagus toward the stomach
small intestine the part of the digestive system in which most chemical digestion takes place
liver the largest organ inside the body; it plays a role in many body processes, such as producing bile for the digestive system
bile a substance produced by the liver that breaks up fat chemicals
villi tiny finger-shaped structures that cover the inner surface of the small intestine and provide a large surface area through which digested food is absorbed
large intestine the last section of the digestive system, where water is absorbed into the bloodstream and the remaining material is eliminated from the body
gallbladder the organ that stores bile after it is produced by the liver
