VET 113- Anatomy + F

Immunity and Defense- chp. 13

TermDefinition
The Immune System the body's security system. Recognizes foreign material and protects the body from non-body parts.
Skin a physical barrier that contain resident microorganisms that destroy pathogens. The acidic pH and fatty acid content of sweat inhibits bacterial growth.
Mucous Membranes one of the first lines of defense.
Spleen helps with internal protection
Lymph Nodes small structures found throughout the body, filter lymph, and contain macrophages.
Types of Lymph Nodes -submandibular, prescapular, axillary, inguinal, popliteal
Mucosa-Associated Lymphatic Tissue (MALT) clusters of lymphoid tissue in various areas throughout the animal's body, located near mucosal surfaces. They identify antigens and mount immune response
Tonsils these are present at the beginning of lymph draining system, lack a capsule, and found in mucosal tissue. They destroy foreign material before it can cause disease.
Peyer's Patches these are aggregations of lymphoid in the small intestine, majority are found in the lining of the ileum.
Thymus lymphoid tissue found in young animals, located in the mediastinum and shrivels as the animal matures. T lymphocytes mature in this site.
Innate Immune System immune system that is the 1st and 2nd line of defense. It is rapid, nonspecific, present at birth, and destroys non-self invaders
Adaptive Immune System immune system that is the 3rd line of defense and targets specific pathogens. This is slower to respond and not present at birth.
External Innate Immunity first line of defense, has barriers on the surface of the body (skin, mucous membranes, tears, saliva, etc.).
Internal Innate Defense second line of defense, controls the spread of infection of a pathogen by inflammation.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
