ANATOMY

CELLS chap 3

TermDefinition
HOMEOSTASIS Is maintaining a constant and appropriate internal environment such as temperature, PH, glucose levels etc
Cytoplasm Watery liquid found inside and outside the organelles but outside the nucleus, BUT outside nucleus
What is the plasma cell? Cytoplasm
what are its functions? Functions of the Plasma Membrane: Movement of materials into and out of cell, acts as a barrier to the external environment Acts as a site for receiving signals from the rest of the body Acts as a site for holding the cell in place
What is its double layer made of? The plasma membrane is made up of 2 layers of molecules=Phospholipid bilayer
what are ribosomes? Make proteins
Are ribosomes organelles? Are not organelles because they do not have a plasma membrane
what is Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER)? A network of channels
2 types of Endoplasmic Reticulum? Rough ER: Contains Ribosomes Smooth ER: NO ribosomes
What is endoplasmic reticulum fuction? Function is to detoxify chemicals that enter the cell
what is the rough Endoplasmic reticulum? RER endoplasmic=within cytoplasm reticulum=network; rough surface of membrane covered with ribosomes
Function of Rough Endoplasmic reticulum? RER is the synthesis of PROTEINS
What is smooth Endoplasmic reticulum? Detoxifies harmful substances
What is the Golgi Complex functions? Packages proteins made by the ERE and sends them where they need to go. (like a FedEx center)
What are Vesicles? A sphere of membrane w/ something in it
What are lysosmes? Are sacs of powerful digestive enzymes to dissolve an old organelle, bacteria, or commit cell suicide = APOPTOSIS (programmed cell death)
What are transport vesicles? When material needs to move from RER to Golgi complex or from Golgi complex to cell membrane etc
What are lipids, cabs, and enzymes stored in a cell? Storage Vesicles
What is the smallest living unit in the body? Mitochondria Makes ATP for us
Where is DNA stored? Nucleus
What is Translation and where does it occur? Is the process in the RNA communicating w/ a ribosome to tell it what type of protein to make. TRANSLATION IS CHARCACTERIZED BY PROTEIN SYNTHESIS In the cytoplasm
What are Centrioles? Are filaments within the cell that function during metaphase-anaphase of mitosis.
What is the function of a Flaelleum? Tail used to help move (locomotion) example. Sperm cell
What is the function of Microvilli? Increase the surface area of cells
What is the function of Cillia? To sweep substances along across the top of the cell
What is Metastasize? Leave the original site and go somewhere else to grow
Carinoma Epithelial tissue (SKIN)
Sarcoma Connective tissue (bones + muscles)

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
