The Muscles Actions
actions of SHOULDER muscles
Term | Definition |
---|---|
trapezius (upper) | elevates scapula (shrugs shoulder); rotates scapula upwards (glenoid cavity faces superiorly) |
trapezius (middle) | retracts & aids in elevation of scapula |
trapezius (lower) | depresses & retracts scapula; rotates scapula upwards (glenoid cavity faces superiorly); gives inferior stabilization of the scapula; aids to maintain spine in extension |
levator scapulae | elevates scapula; rotates scapula downwards (glenoid cavity faces inferiorly); works with upper trapezius to elevate & retract scapula |
rhomboid major | retracts & elevates scapula; inferior fibers aid in rotating glenoid cavity inferiorly) |
rhomboid minor | retracts & elevates scapula; assists in rotating the scapula downwards |
serratus anterior | protracts & rotates scapula upwards (glenoid cavity facing superiorly); stabilizes vertebral border of scapula to thoracic cage (along with rhomboids and middle trapezius) |
pectoralis minor | depresses & rotates scapula downward; important anterior shoulder stabilizer |
subclavius | depresses clavicle; pulls clavicle inferiorly & anteriorly |
deltoid (anterior) | abduction, horizontal flexion, medial rotation of humerus at shoulder |
deltoid (middle) | abduction of humerus at the shoulder |
deltoid (posterior) | abduction, horizontal extension, lateral rotation of humerus at shoulder |
pectorals major (sternal) | flexion, adduction, medial rotation, horizontal flexion of the humerus at shoulder; extends flexed humerus; through action on humerus, it depresses, protracts, rotates scapula downwards |
