axial | found along the axis of the body (head, neck, torso) |
appendicular | related to the limbs (arms and legs) |
pectoral | pertaining to the chest (specifically the muscle) |
thorax | area including all parts of the chest |
axilla | armpit/underarm |
central | located in the center of a thing or place |
cephalic | head |
peripheral | away from the center of the body or an organ |
deep | away from the surface of the body, internal |
superficial | near the surface of the body |
sagittal plane | divides body into right and left portions |
transverse plane | divides body into superior and inferior portions |
perineal | area between the anus and external genitalia |
groin | area where thigh and abdomen meet |

ophthalmic | pertaining to the eye or orbit |
integumentary system | skin, hair, nails, glands; protection/barrier |
skeletal system | bones, cartilage, ligaments; support, protection, make RBCs |
muscular system | includes cardiac, smooth, and skeletal; allows for movement of the body and internal organs |
nervous system | brain and spinal cord; regulates the body using electrical impulses to send signals |
endocrine system | glands that secrete hormones; chemical regulation of the body |
lymphatic system | glands and tissues that fight illness |
respiratory system | lungs and air tubes that help exchange CO2 and O2 between the body cells and the environment |
reproductive system | uterus, testes and other organs involved with producing offspring |
cardiovascular system | heart and blood vessels; transport of oxygen and nutrients throughout the body and carrying wastes away from the tissues; also known as circulatory |
digestive system | liver, stomach, intestines and other organs that receive, breakdown, and absorb nutrients |
urinary system | kidneys, bladder, urethra; filters the blood , creates, stores, and secretes liquid waste |
