Articulations/ Joint

Articulations/ Joints

TermDefinition
Gliding Joint Nonaxial or Multiaxial Sacroiliac Joint, Intercarpal Joint, Vertebrocostal, Acromioclavicular
Hinge Joint Monoaxial, Angular Movement Elbow Joint, Knee Joint, Ankle Joint and Interphalangeal Joint
Pivot Joint Monoaxial, rotation movement Atlantoaxial Joint, Proximal Radioulnar Joint of Elbow
Condylar Joint Biaxial, Angular Movement Radiocarpal of Wrist, Metacarpophalangeal (knuckles 2-5, Metatarsophalangeal (to to foot 2-5)
Saddle Joint Biaxial, angular movement Carpometacarpal Joint (CMC)= Thumb, Sternoclavicular Joint
Ball and Socket Joint Triaxial, angular movement that includes circumduction, plus rotation movement Shoulder Joint, Hip Joint
Flexion –Anterior–posterior plane –Reduces angle between elements
Extension -Anterior-Posterior Plane -Increases Angles between Elelments
Hyperextension Extension Past Anatomical Position
Abduction Forntal (Coronal) Plane -Moves away from longitudinal axis -Away from body center
Adduction Frontal Plane -moves toward longitudinal axis -toward body center
Circumduction circular motion without rotation combo of angles that appear to be seamless and uninterupted 360 degrees
Medial Rotation- Internal rotates toward Axis
Lateral Rotation- external rotates away from axis
Pronation from anatomical position turns forearm radius over ulna, palm faces posterior
Supination forearm in anatomical position, palm faces anterior
Inversion face sole of foot inward
Eversion face sole of foot outward
Dorsiflexion flexion at ankle (lifting toes toward the ceiling)
Plantar Flexion flexion at ankle (pointing toes toward the floor)
Opposition thumb movement toward fingers or palm (grasping)
Reposition opposite of opposition; relax thumb
Protraction moves anteriorly in the horizontal plane (pushing forward)
Retraction opposite of protraction moving posteriorly (pulling back)
Elevation moves in superior direction (up)
Depression moves inferior direction (down)
Lateral Flexion Bends vertebral column from side to side
Joint Capsule Around a joint -outer fibrous (tough) layer Inner synovial membrane: makes synovial fluid
Joint Cavity space between cartilage
Articular Cartilage where the joints are put together
Synovial Fluid keeps joints from causing friction
Accessory Structures Meniscus: fibrocartilage in knee and jaw Fat Pad Bursa: fluid filled pillow (sac) full of synovial fluid , whereever there is a "pointy thing" -Bursitis: inflammation of fluid filled sac Ligaments: connect bone to bone Tendon: Connect muscle to bone

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
