Anatomical skeletal structures
Term | Definition |

Skull | skeletal structure that contains the cranial and facial bones |
Cranium | bones of the skull that protect the brain |
Facial bones | bones ( of the skull) that make up the face |
Clavicle | the bone of the shoulder girdle that forms the bone |
Scapula | the bone of the shoulder girdle that forms the shoulder blade |
Sternum | the thoracic bone that forms the breast bone and serves as the anterior attachment for the ribs: is part of the shoulder girdle |
Ribs | a series of slender, curved, thoracic bones that form ribcage and protect the thoracic cavity. articulated in pairs to the spine. |
Thoracic cage | the rib cage, made of the sternum, ribs, and thoracic vertebrae: meant to protect vital organs |
Coxal bone | a large flattened irregularly shaped bone of the pelvic girdle that is constructed in the center and expand above and below |
Sacrum | a slightly curved triangular shaped vertebral bone comprised of five segments that gradually fuse together in childhood to become one also called the S-spine |
Coccyx | the vertebral bone that is made of four bones that fuse together to become the tailbone. This fusion of coccygeal vertebrae typically occurs in early adulthood. |
Calcaneus | the largest tarsal bone also called the heel bone |
Phalanges | the finger and toe bones, include the proximal, medical and distal bones. |
Metatarsals | the bones that make up the foot |
Tarsals | the bones that make up the ankle (include calcaneus) |
Fibula | the smaller of the two lower leg bones, located laterally to the tibia |
Tibia | the large medically located lower leg bone (shinbone) |
Patella | bone that forms the anterior part of the knee |
Femur | upper leg bone, longest bone in the body (thigh bone) |
Metacarpals | the Five bones make up the hand |
Carpals | the eight bones that make up the wrist |
Radius | the smaller arm bone found on the thumb side of the forearm |
Ulna | the larger forearm bone. The proximal end forms the elbow |
Vertebral (Spinal) Column | the series of 26 vertebrae that extends from the cranium to the coccyx, providing support and forming a flexible bony case for the spinal cord. Spine |
Humerus | The upper arm bone. |
