Lower Limbs

Pelvic Girdle broken into 3 main regions (ilium, ischium, pubis)
Ilium largest portion of hips
Sacroiliac Joint sacrum meets the hip bone
Iliac Crest top of hip bone
Ischium inferior, posterior portion of the pelvic girdle
Ischial Spine prominence, may hurt someones lap if you sit on them
Lesser Sciatic Notch open for sciatic nerve to pass through
Obturator Foramen hole formed by ischium, ilium, and pubis (blood vessels and nerves pass through this opening)
Acetabulum the fossa formed by the ilium, ischium, and pubis (is the socket for the head of the femur, creates the hip joint when the femur is attached)
Pubis Symphysis joins the pelvic girdle anteriorly
Male Pelvic Structure Hip Angle - narrow, taller Coccyx - points anteriorly Pubic Arch - less than 90 degrees Pelvic Cavity - deeper, oval shaped
Female Pelvic Structure Hip Angle - wider, shallow Coccyx - points inferiorly Pubic Arch - more than 90 degrees Pelvic Cavity - shallow, circular
Femur the bone of the thigh or upper hind limb, articulating at the hip and the knee
Head articulates with the acetabulum of the hipbone to form the hip joint
Neck a constricted part of bone just below the head, often breaks when your old
Greater/Lesser Trochanters attachment sites for buttocks and thigh muscles
Patella location anterior to the knee joint
Patella Functions protect knee joint, increase leverage of the quadriceps muscles, maintain the position of the tendon when knee is flexed
Tibia the inner and typically larger of the two bones between the knee and the ankle
Tibial Tuberosity attachment site for patellar ligament
Medial Mallelous articulates with the talus bone of ankle
Fibula the outer and usually smaller of the two bones between the knee and the ankle in humans
Lateral Mallelous articulates with talus bone of the ankle
Tarsus made from 7 tarsal bones
Talus ankle bones, articulates with tibia and fibula
Calcaneus heel bone, largest and strongest
Metatarsals 1-5 (big toe to pinky)
Phalanges 14, similar to phalanges of hand (big toe has two phalanges, like thumb)
