Homeostasis

AP CHP 1

Homeostasis Meaning The existence of a stable internal environment despite unpredictable surroundings
Homeostasis word breakdown Homeo - similar to Stasis - state of standing
Homeostatic Regulation Autoregulation and Extrinsic regulation
Autoregulation At cell and tissue level (fix the house)
Extrinsic Regulation By nervous and endocrine systems (fix the city)
Receptor Receives stimulus or detects change in the environment Ex: house detects temp is 65 degrees
Control Center Process the receptors information, then decides based on set point Ex: house needs to be set at 70 degrees
Effector Carries out instructions from control center to restore homeostasis Ex:HVAC turns on until set point of 70 is reached
Negative Feedback Response reverses the original stimulus (restores to normal range) Ex:Thermoregulation
Thermoregulation Self-regulation mechanism for mammals to maintain body temperature Ex: sweating to cool off the body
Positive Feedback Amplifies the original change in conditions; moved away from homeostasis Ex: childbirth, clotting to stop bleeding
Equilibrium Opposing forces are balanced; failure results in disease
Dynamic Equilibrium Continual adaptation to changing conditions
