Directional Terms, Planes, and Regions LO 4.3

TermDefinition
directional terms locate a portion of the body - used to describe a position of the body
anterior/ventral front side
posterior/dorsal back side
inferior below another another structure
superior above another structure
lateral to the side (pertaining to the side)
medial middle (pertaining to the middle)
deep through or away from the surface
superficial at or near the surface
proximal near the point of attachment to the trunk
distal away from the point of attachment to the trunk
supine patient is lying on their spine facing upward
prone patient is lying on their abdomen with their face down
frontal/coronal plane imaginary line that divides the body into anterior and posterior positions
midsagittal plane imaginary line that divides the body into equal right and left halves
transverse plane imaginary line that intersects the body horizontally and divides the body into upper and lower sections
sagittal/lateral plane parallel to the median plane and divides the body into left and right halves
right upper quadrant (RUQ) area of the abdomen that contains parts of the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, and intestinal tract.
left lower quadrant (LLQ) the abdominal area that contains parts of the intestines and parts of the reproductive organs in females
left upper quadrant (LUQ) area of the abdomen that contains the stomach, spleen, and parts of the liver, pancreas and intestines
right lower quadrant (RLQ) the abdominal area that contains the appendix, parts of the intestines, and parts of the reproductive organs of the female
lumbar regions left and right regions of the body in the back and sides between the lowest ribs and the pelvis
iliac and inguinal regions regions near the upper portion of the hip bone
epigastric region above the stomach and distal to sternum
hypogastric region area just below the umbilical region
umbilical region area surrounding the navel
hypochondriac region just below the cartilage of the ribs, immediately over the abdomen
