atom smallest particle of an elemental substance that exhibits the properties of that element; composed of protons, neutrons and electrons
molecule particle consisting of two or more atoms joined together by chemical bonds
organelle small sub cellular structures that perform specific functions for the cell as a whole
cell structural unit of all living things
tissue group of cells and their inter cellular substance specialized to perform a specific function; primary epithelial, connective, muscle and nervous tissue
organ formed by two or more tissues and adapted to carry out a specific function; stomach
organ system group that works together to perform a vital body function; nervous system
organism living animal or plant which represents the sum total of all its organ systems working together to maintain life
integumentary system skin and its derivatives; provides external protective covering of the body
skeletal system protection and support composed primarily of bone and cartilage
muscular system consists of skeletal muscles of the body and their connective tissue attachments
nervous system fast acting control system that triggers muscle connection or gland secretion
circulatory system circulates blood and lymph through the body, consisting of the heart, blood vessels, blood, lymph, and the lymphatic vessels and glands
endocrine system includes internal organs that secrete hormones
lymphatic system consists of lymphatic vessels, lymph nodes, lymph; drains excess tissue fluid from extracellular space; nodes provide sites for immune surveillance
digestive system processes food into absorbable units and eliminates indigestible wastes
respiratory system carries out gas exchange; nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, lungs
urinary system responsible for water, electrolyte, and acid base balance; removal of nitrogenous wastes
reproductive system organ system that functions to produce offspring
superior (cranial) toward the head or upper part of a structure; above
inferior (caudal) away from the head or toward the lower part; below
anterior (ventral) toward or at the front of the body; in front of
posterior (dorsal) toward or at the end of the body; behind
medial toward or at the midline of the body; inner side
lateral away from the midline of the body; outer side
intermediate between a more medial and a more lateral structure
proximal closer to the origin of the body part of point of attachment of a limb to the body trunk
distal farther from the origin of a body part or the point of attachment of a limb to the body trunk
superficial (external) toward or at the body surface
deep (internal) away from the body surface; more internal
frontal (coronal) vertically; divide the body into anterior and posterior part; in half
sagittal a longitudinal plane that divides the body or any of its parts into right and left positions
midsagittal (median) specific sagittal plane that lies exactly in the midline
