Anatomy Ch. 11

QuestionAnswer
Hematopoiesis blood cell formation, process carried by red bone marrow, or myeloid tissue. located primarily in the ends of epiphyses, certain long bones, flat bones of the skull, in the pelvis, and in the sternum and ribs.
The long bone consists of the following structures visible to the naked eye: diaphysis, epiphysis, articular cartilage, periosteum, medullary, (marrow) cavity, and endosteum.
Compact bone makes up about 80% of the total bone mass in an adult human body. It is made up of cylinder-shape structural units called osteons, or haversian systems.
Simple structures that make up osteons: Lamellae, lacunae, canaliculi, and central canal.
Cancellous bone makes up about 20% of total bone mass and differs in microscopic structure from compact bone.
Cancellous bone contains no ______, but consists of ________ osteons, crisscrossing bony branches called trabeculae.
Osteoblasts are small cells that synthesize and secret an organic matrix called osteoid.
Osteoclasts erode bone by releasing hydrochloric acid (HCL) which dissolves the hard mineral crystals, and collagenase, which is an enzyme that breaks the peptide bonds in collagen proteins.
Osteocytes are mature, nondividing osteoblasts that have become surrounded by matrix and now lie within lacunae.
Cartilage fibers are embedded in a firm gel instead of a calcified cement substance.
Types of cartilage hyaline cartilage, elastic cartilage, and fibrocartilage.
Elastic cartilage gives form to the external ear, epiglottis that covers the opening of the respiratory tract during swallowing, and the eustachian tubes that connect the middle ear and nasal cavity.
Fibrocartilage characterized by abundant fibrous elements within th ematrix. Strong, rigid, and most often associated with regions of dense connective tissue such as pubic symphysis, intevertebral disks, and near the points of attachment of some large tendons
