Anatomy Flascards 2 (respiratory system)

TermDefinition
Alveoli Site of gas exchange in the respiratory system.
Diffusion Method of movement for respiratory gases, movement from areas of high to low concentration.
External Respiration The exchange of gases between pulmonary blood and the alveoli.
Inspiration Occurs when the diaphragm and externals intercostals contract, thoracic size increases, and air pressure decreases inside the lungs.
Expiration Occurs when the diaphragm and externals intercostals relax, thoracic size decreases, and air pressure increases inside the lungs.
Vital Capacity The total volume of air that can be moved in or out of the lungs.
Residual Volume The volume of air left in the lungs after a full exhale; what is left after expiratory reserve; keeps the lungs inflated.
Tracheal Cartilages Maintains the structure of the airway of the trachea.
Trachea Air passageway; filters, warms and moistens air.
Pleural Cavity Aids optimal functioning of the lungs during respiration, and contains pleural fluid which allows the pleurae to slide effortlessly against each other during ventilation.
Tidal Volume Amount of air inhaled or exhaled with each breath under resting conditions.
