Manubrium | The superior trapezoidal portion of the sternum, which contains the clavicular and jugular notches |
Body | The long and flat portion of the sternum, flexing outwards. Serves as a point of articulation with the cartilage of the ribs |
Xiphoid Process | The small, pointed, inferior portion of the sternum, which reinforces the cartilage in the celiac plexus and serves as a point of attachment for many muscles |
Sternal Angle (Angle of Louis) | A palpable landmark formed by the joining of the manubrium and the body of the sternum. |
Clavicular Notch | Depression in the manubrium where the collarbones meet |
Jugular Notch | A large depression in the superior medial manubrium; a visible depression in humans |
Xiphisternal Joint | Joint in the inferior sternum where the body of the sternum and the xiphoid process meet |
