Epidermis and Dermis

QuestionAnswer
Which layer of skin is the epidermis located and what kind of tissue is it made up of? It is located in the cutaneous layer and is made up of epithelial tissue.
How thick is the stratum corneum and what structure is it like? It is about 20-30 cells thick and it is shingle like.
What is the stratum corneum most consisted of and why? It is mostly consisted of dead cells because it is the farthest way from nutrients.
What percent of the epidermis is made up of the stratum corneum and what is it filled with? About 75% of the epidermis is made of the stratum corneum and it is filled with keratin.
What is keratin? Keratin is a protein that makes the skin tough and water resistant.
What is special about the stratum lucidum? Not all skin has it.
What type of skin can have the stratum lucidum? Thick/hairless skin .
What happens in the stratum lucidum and what does it look like? Cells begin to die in this layer and it looks clear.
What is the structure of the stratum granulosum? The cells get flatter as they continue outward.
What does the stratum granulosum look like in the epidermis? It looks like a dark line.
What happens in the stratum spinosum and why? Keratinocytes continue to grow upward because the cells are alive and they are closer to the nutrients/blood.
What kind of cells are in the stratum basale? Simple cuboidal looking cells.
What is located in the stratum basale , what does it create and why? Keratinocyte factories meaning that this is where cells come from, it creates millions of cells a day because it is the closest to the nutrients from the dermis.
What makes up the bulk of the cells in the epidermis? Keratinocytes
What produces melanin in the epidermis? Melanocytes
Where are melanocytes located, what do they do, and what do they look like? They sit at the bottom of the epidermis, they dump melanin into the keratinocytes and they look like octopi.
What creates moles and freckles? High concentration of melanocytes.
What are merkel cells? They are a nerve function that sits at the bottom.
What are langerhan cells? They are immune cells in the epidermis.
What is in the papillary that senses pain? Free nerve endings
What is the dermis made of? Connective tissue
What is the papillary layer made of? Loose connective tissue
What is located in the reticular layer and what do they do? Glands and their ducts stretch to the surface of the skin.
What is found in the reticular layer and what is it made of? Hair follicles and dense connective tissue.
What three factors determine skin tone? Amount of melanin, carotene, and oxygen rich hemoglobin.
What does hemoglobin do? It carries oxygen in your blood.
