Connective Tissues
Question | Answer |
---|---|
4 types of connective tissue | proper, bone, blood, cartilage |
2 subtypes of proper tissues | loose and dense |
proper loose connective tissues | areolar, adipose, and reticular |
Areolar tissue | gel like matrix with collagen, elastin and reticular fibers |
function of areolar tissue | wraps and cushions organs |
location of areolar tissue | under epithelia of body, mucous membranes, surrounds capillaries |
Adipose tissue | closely packed fat cells have nucleus pushed to side by large fat droplets |
function of adipose tissue | provides reserve food fuel, insulates against heat loss, and supports/protects organs |
location of adipose tissue | under skin in subcutaneous tissue, around kidneys and eyeballs, and within abdomen and breasts |
reticular tissue | loose network of reticular fibers with reticular cells on them |
function of reticular tissue | fibers form a soft internal skeleton (stroma) that supports other cell types |
location of reticular tissue | lymphoid organs (lymph nodes, bone marrow, spleen) |
types of proper dense tissues | regular, irregular, and elastic |
proper dense regular tissue | parallel collagen fibers, few elastic fibers contains fibroblasts |
function of proper dense regular tissue | attaches muscles to bones/muscles and withstands great tension/force |
location of proper dense regular tissue | tendons and ligaments |
proper dense irregular tissue | irregularly arranged collagen fibers with some elastic fibers and fibroblasts |
function of dense irregular tissue | withstands tension and provides structural strength |
location of dense irregular tissue | dermis of skin, and submucosa of digestive tract |
dense elastic tissue | dense tissue containing a high proportion of elastic fibers |
function of dense elastic tissue | allows tissue to recoil after stretching and maintains flow of blood through arteries |
location of dense elastic tissue | walls of large arteries, ligaments associated with the vertebral column and walls of bronchial tubes |
3 types of cartilage | hyaline, elastic, and fibrocartilage |
Hyaline cartilage | network of collagen fibers with chondroblasts within lacunae |
function of hyaline cartilage | supports/reinforces, resists pressure, and provides cushion |
elastic cartilage | similar to hyaline, only containing more elastic fibers |
function of elastic cartilage | maintains shape/structure while providing flexibility |
location of hyaline cartilage | end of lone bone, joint cavities, ribs, nose, trachea, larynx |
location of elastic cartilage | external ear and epiglottis |
fibrocartilage | metric is less firm than hyaline containing thick collagen fibers |
function of fibre cartilage | strength for absorbing compressive shock |
location of fibrocartilage | intervertebral discs, discs of knee joints |
