anatomical position | the positioning of the body when it is standing upright and facing forward with each arm hanging on either side of the body, and the palms facing forward. |
homeostasis | the tendency toward a relatively stable equilibrium between interdependent elements, especially as maintained by physiological processes. |
adenosine triphosphate (ATP) | a compound consisting of an adenosine molecule bonded to three phosphate groups, present in all living tissue. |
enzyme | a substance produced by a living organism which acts as a catalyst to bring about a specific biochemical reaction. |
fluid mosaic model | the structure of the plasma membrane as a mosaic of components —including phospholipids, cholesterol, proteins, and carbohydrates—that gives the membrane a fluid character. |
connective tissue | tissue that connects, supports, binds, or separates other tissues or organs, typically having relatively few cells embedded in an amorphous matrix, often with collagen or other fibers, and including cartilaginous, fatty, and elastic tissues. |
dermis | the thick layer of living tissue below the epidermis which forms the true skin, containing blood capillaries, nerve endings, sweat glands, hair follicles, and other structures. |
diaphysis | the shaft or central part of a long bone. |
axial skeleton | bones in your skull (cranial and facial bones), ears, neck, back (vertebrae, sacrum and tailbone) and ribcage (sternum and ribs). |
apendicular skeleton | one of two major bone groups in the body, comprised of the upper and lower extremities, which include the shoulder girdle and pelvis. |
